King James

This is the "Book that changed the world".

A product of the Reformation, excellently translated using the texts available at the time.  Later discoveries have revealed minor inaccuracies but it is very reliable. The meaning of some of the English words used has changed over the years,  so the New King James version is probably preferable. There are over 31,000 verses in the Bible and less than 100 of them have a possible inaccuracy, which means 99.7% accuracy.

English Standard Version

Intended to be a literally accurate translation. Some small omissions which do not affect doctrine.  Tell me if you find any. One of the few which correctly translates  Eph 1.13

New International Version

Slightly more accurate than the King James and in modern English.

The version with footnotes itemising alternative translation of some phrases is preferable.

The Septuagint Translation of the Old Testament.

In the two centuries BC a library in Alexandria which had the object of obtaining originals or copies of a wide range of important books and translating them into Greek (the international language of the time, most widely understood), arranged for seventy-two Hebrew scribes who were also proficient in Greek, to translate the Hebrew version Old Testament into Greek. This is referred to as The Septuagint. (or the Latin number   LXX). Copy available at  https://www.biblestudytools.com/lxx   As the translation spread over 200 years I assume the 72 translators were a committee whose members were replaced from time to time. It's authority is confirmed by having been quoted more times in the New Testament (by Jesus and the Apostles) than the MS text used by most current translations. The MS was the result of a Jewish re-compilation of the Old Testament, including the Apocrypha, during the 6th to 10th centuries AD (by people who did not accept Jesus as The Messiah i.e not possessors of the Holy Spirit)

Rom 8:9  But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Announcement

When you click on a link to another site,  I may or may not agree with their views on any particular subject, although I am generally happy with their approach. Many sites claiming to expound Christian beliefs are careless in their Bible quotes, referring only to those  apparently supporting their view but ignoring those that do not. I have tried to  avoid doing that. Our approach to Scripture must be to learn the truth, not to win arguments as if we were playing a game. You may think I have too many quotes but I believe the Sword of the Spirit should be used as much as possible.
