When a human's spirit leaves it's human body the Scriptures are very clear on the eventual destination and experience, depending solely on the relationship of that person to The Lord at that time. When any human being dies their spirit returns to God.
Ecc 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
God then directs that spirit to a "waiting place" depending on the relationship with him. His children (Bible Believinb, Born Again, Christians) to sleep in Paradise until Jesus returns to the Earth at the end of days.
Luk 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
1Th 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
1Th 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
1Th 4:15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
1Th 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
That "Sleep" appears to be a similar condition to what we currently experience because it is possible for it to be disturbed, to the annoyance of the sleeper.
1Sa 28:15 And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up?
The position of those who are not His Children is entirely different. They are also in a place awaiting the final judgement but do not appear to be "Sleeping".
Luk 16:22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
Luk 16:23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Luk 16:24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
On the contrary, the person involved was concious and suffering from extreme heat and thirst."Hell" is clearly a waiting place because, eventually,
Rev 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
Rev 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
If any person interprets this as casting doubts on God's love and mercy, the scriptures clearly state that God is true, even if we cannot reconcile it.
Rom 3:3 For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect?
Rom 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.
In the end, God will be proven to have been true to his word and all will be aware of that.
